Polska Telefonia Cyfrowa (ERA) is the Polish mobile telecommunications provider one of the largest in Central and Eastern Europe. By the end of 2006 the number of company’s mobile network customers reached about 12 mln.
Polska Telefonia Cyfrowa is the only fully privately owned Polish mobile operator in which strategic shares hold T-Mobile Deutschland GmbH and Elektrim S.A. ERA began offering its services in 1996 and since then has grown into one of the top ten Polish companies. It has led the national mobile telecommunications market for many years. The ERA network covers more than 96 percent of Polish territory inhabited by more than 99.5 percent of the country’s population. ERA has brought new mobile standards to Poland. It pioneered the mobile video transmission and introduced MMS commercially. ERA has launched innovative products to secure its continued leadership, including cooperation with media, m-banking, m-commerce partners, etc. Among those projects, ERA has begun the development of third generation voice and non-voice services and applications. ERA obtained its UMTS license for Poland in December 2000. In August 2004 ERA announced testing about its first users of the UMTS technology and currently offers high data transmission based on UMTS technology.
ERA has been involved in IST projects since 2001. These projects were:
RURAL WINS, a project aiming at fostering communications in rural areas,
MOST Conference where ERA organized a conference on Technology for the Mobile Society attended by over 140 persons from 20 different countries,
TU AMO (The Ultimate Entertainment Advanced Mobile Open Services Platform) a 3G gaming platform,
DAIDALOS (Designing Advanced network Interfaces for the Delivery and Administration of Location independent Optimized personal Services),
ASG (Adaptive Services Grid) and,
EuQoS (End-to-end Quality of Service support over heterogeneous networks)
MDS (Misuse Detection System)
