Telefónica I+D is operational since 1988 and fully owned by Telefónica S.A, who created it in order to fulfil its Research and Development requirements with more excellence and profitability and to contribute to Telefónica Group competitiveness through technological innovation.

Over the last years, the line of work of Telefónica I+D has evolved towards the objective of becoming a services creation lab. This objective is driven by the emergence of interactive multimedia services, which are increasingly becoming a major force in the telecommunications market.

Telefónica I+D employs over 1200 persons, 93% of them holding a University degree. Telefónica I+D has facilities in 5 cities in Spain as well as two new subsidiary companies in Latin America. Today, Telefónica I+D is an important private company within Spain devoted to R&D and is very active in the following major areas: Narrow- and broadband, fixed and mobile communications, intelligent network, public use telecommunications, speech technology, multimedia services and service creation, network and services management and network innovation, with the purpose of supporting Telefónica in its effort to offer the widest possible range of services within the NGN concept.

Telefónica I+D's network core and protocol department has been active in QoS and network topology related issues with projects related to the Next Generation Network (NGN) concept both internally through its innovation program and in the context of CELTIC and European FP5 and FP6 projects like INTERMON, EUQoS and NetQOS.

As one of the leaders in the IPv6 knowledge in the European scene, it has contributed to the momentum increase of IPv6 technology internationally. This has been done through its contribution to leading initiatives, like LONG and Euro6IX, both in the scope of the European FP5 program. Other European projects in which TI+D participates are Atrium, Muse, MUPBED, etc. Areas of expertise of expertise include

  • Mobile and fixed communications: ALL-IP and IP Multimedia, mobile architecture, terminals, core network and service plane

  • Quality of Service, DiffServ MPLS, Traffic Engineering, L2-3 VPNs, IPv6 networking, Traffic management with BGP.
