The Computing Department at Lancaster is one of the leading Computer Science Departments in the UK with particular strengths in practical and experimental aspects of the subject. In 2004, the department moved into InfoLab21, a brand new state-of-the-art research facility with the broader goal of creating a world-class research, development and business centre in Information and Communication Technologies. Research in the department is organised around four over-lapping themes: communications and distributed systems (CDS), mobile and ubiquitous computing, software systems engineering, and cooperative and interactive systems.
We have a significant critical mass of around 100 members, run around 30 research projects, and have an annual income of £1.5 million. This makes us one of the largest groups in the area world-wide. We have a reputation as a technical leader in our field—for example, the 2002 International Review of UK Research in Computer Science cites us as one of only a handful of sites undertaking “leading-edge systems research”, and also notes our “leadership in the area of middleware”. We have established a large portfolio of funding from the EC and EPSRC, and also enjoy direct industrial funding from BT, Microsoft, Orange, Cisco, HP Labs, France Télécom, Lucent, Intel, Agilent Labs, Telekom Austria and ETRI Korea.
